Fonterra seeks views on support services for farmers

Fonterra is taking a look at the network of support services in place for dairy farmers to ensure they’re meeting the needs of farmers in today’s increasingly complex industry.

Managing Director Co-operative Affairs, Mike Cronin, says dairy farming is an intergenerational game and the industry needs to ensure farmers are being supported right through their farming careers.

“We want all dairy farmers, right from starting out, to know they have access to all the support required to build their farming futures.

“Farmers are operating in an environment of increasing requirements and complexity, and those who are under pressure need to feel the care and support of their community.

“Farmers need to know they can raise issues easily, with absolute confidence they’ll get the help they need to get back on track.

“We also recognise that farmers have different needs depending on the situation they’re in or the stage of their career, which is why we’re also looking at the particular needs of sharemilkers.

“Fonterra aims to work alongside industry, including farmers Tony and Barbara Kuriger who have first-hand experience in these matters, to consider how to create better outcomes.

“Dairy farming is a very rewarding career, but it can be very hard and isolating at times. This industry is known for its ability to co-operate to bring about positive change. This is very much at the core of what we’re seeking to achieve together through these pieces of work,” says Mr Cronin.

It’s important farmers have the opportunity to guide any improvements, so farmers’ views on the systems currently in place, as well insights into the particular challenges faced by sharemilkers, will be sought and fed into the review
