Fonterra currently collects around 90 per cent of New Zealand's milk production. Because Fonterra purchases such a large proportion of New Zealand's total milk, there isn't a 'market price' for milk that is independent of the price paid by Fonterra.
As a result, since its formation in 2001, Fonterra has calculated a Farmgate Milk Price. This enables total returns to be allocated between payments for milk and returns on the share capital invested by farmer shareholders in the Co-operative.
