Milk is a natural source of many of the valuable nutrients people need. It’s the richest natural food source of bio-available calcium and contributes many other essential nutrients including protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and zinc.

To remain at the leading-edge of dairy innovation, we work closely with world-leading health professionals, scientists and universities to develop products, conduct clinical trials, and develop sustainable dairy production processes.

We innovate from grass to glass. Whether it’s milk products that support heart health and mobility, high protein sports nutrition or extra stretch mozzarella cheese, we make superior dairy nutrition accessible to everyone, at every stage of life.

Working with our farmers, we share our innovation and knowledge to help improve on-farm sustainability and develop smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable grass-based farming practices.

We partner with many of the world’s leading foodservice providers and food companies, providing them with specialised dairy ingredients and solutions to help them produce healthy and delicious products and meals.


 

Unrivaled appetite for innovation.

For decades, we’ve led the world in dairy innovation. Our Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North, New Zealand, employs many of the world’s leading experts in dairy science. Dating back to 1927, it’s one of the largest dairy research facilities in the world with an unrivaled reputation for unlocking new applications from milk.

We employ more than 280 researchers, engineers and scientists from 46 countries – many of whom are the world’s leading experts in dairy science. Our Centre is home to over 130 PhDs and 350 dairy patents. It’s complemented by our product application centres in Australia, Malaysia, Chile and Brazil, where we collaboratively work to be at the forefront of the future of dairy.

Sports Nutrition

We’re experts in protein.

As a world-leader in the commercial production of milk protein concentrates, we create specialised nutritional and functional products for sports. This includes the development of whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate for ready to mix powders, beverages and bars.

 

We’ve been measuring protein quality for more than 30 years and are research leaders in Protein Quality Assessment. 

 

We’ve developed proteins for a wide range of health foods including yoghurt, beverages, bars and medical foods – helping people give their body what it needs most.

Bone and Musculoskeletal Health

We have 30 years’ experience in bone health research. 

 

We have one of the world’s largest databases of musculoskeletal health indicators. 

 

This helps support our health research in other areas of muscle health and development, sports recovery and performance, and satiety and immunity.

Probiotic Health

We’re top of our game in probiotics research. 

 

Our team was one of the earliest to develop, screen and commercialise probiotics for health.

 

We’ve developed unique strains to improve gut health and help prevent eczema in infants.  

 

Some of our latest research is exploring how we can protect against diabetes.
