Fonterra, a global leader in dairy nutrition, has committed to invest RM20 million in its Malaysian manufacturing operations in FY17 with work set to begin from September 2016.

Managing Director Fonterra Brands Malaysia and Singapore Jose Miguel Porraz-Lando said this investment is part of Fonterra’s on-going commitment to food safety and quality, and improving manufacturing efficiencies at the Co-operative’s Susumas site in Kuala Lumpur.

“Fonterra Brands Malaysia produces hundreds of millions of products every year – for local consumption and for export across Asia and the Middle East. We continually invest in our infrastructure to ensure we remain world-class in food safety, health & safety, and consumer nutrition,” he said.

Fonterra established its first Malaysian manufacturing facility, Susumas, in 1992 and its second, Dairymas, in 1999. Both sites meet international and local industry standards including the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), ISO 9001, FSSC 22000 and Veterinary Health Mark, as certified by independent certification bodies, the Ministry of Health and DVS. All products are also certified Halal by JAKIM.

Mr Porraz-Lando said this year Fonterra celebrates 40 years in Malaysia, and this investment highlights Fonterra’s commitment to the future of Malaysia, where we are proud to hold a leadership position in this highly developed market.

“Over the last six years, we’ve invested close to RM60 million into upgrading our infrastructure as we are focused on continued improvements at both of our sites,” said Mr Porraz-Lando.

Fonterra’s Susumas site has the capacity to process and pack 30,000 metric tonnes of milk powder every year. It produces Anlene, Anchor, Anmum and Fernleaf products which are supplied to around 20,000 local retail outlets and exported to 13 countries across the region.

The Co-operative’s Dairymas site has the capacity to process around 16,000 tonnes of yoghurt and cultured milk products each year, producing  CalciYum, Solivite and Anlene brands for local consumption.

Fonterra Brands Malaysia Operations Director Lay Moi Kow said this investment will see Fonterra improve operating layouts and upgrade equipment at these two sites.

This investment will see us improve the current layout at our Susumas site ensuring we continue to meet best practice manufacturing standards in health and safety, food safety and quality,” she said.

Mr Porraz-Lando said that Malaysia is one of Fonterra’s eight most important global markets and the Co-operative is focused on continuing to build its presence in the country.

“We’ve been supplying high quality dairy nutrition to Malaysians for generations. We are focused on being the most trusted source of dairy nutrition for all Malaysian families and we’re investing in local infrastructure, our brands and our people, to achieve this,” said Mr Porraz-Lando.

This investment follows the opening of the company’s new Global Business Services centre in Kuala Lumpur in October 2015.
