Ten Thousand People Marching 10 Thousand Steps to Fight Osteoporosis

3 MINUTE READ

Jakarta, January 12, 2025 – Two out of five Indonesians are at risk of osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the likelihood of fractures. Data from Anlene™’s bone scans conducted between January and December 2024 reveal that nearly 50% (67,547) of the over 150,000 individuals scanned are at moderate-to-high risk. These individuals have a bone density lower than -1.0, classifying them as osteopenic - a condition that, if left unaddressed, can progress to osteoporosis.

To combat this growing concern, Fonterra Brands Indonesia, through its flagship brand Anlene™, has joined forces with the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI) and the Health Ministry (Kemenkes) to raise awareness about osteoporosis prevention. Together, they launched the “Jalan Kaki 10 Ribu Langkah” initiative today at Plaza Tenggara GBK, where more than 10,000 participants came together to walk 10,000 steps in support of bone health.

Osteoporosis poses a serious public health challenge, particularly in Asia, where more than half of all hip fractures caused by the condition are expected to occur by 2050. Among the elderly, it’s estimated that 63% will experience reduced activity due to osteoporosis, underlining the urgency of prevention efforts. Beyond the physical impact, osteoporosis significantly affects quality of life by reducing mobility, causing chronic pain, and stripping individuals of their independence. Losing the ability to move freely can affect self-confidence and lead to stress and feelings of helplessness. Early prevention is essential to help people stay active and live life to the fullest.

“Anlene™ has been a pioneer in bone health for decades, inspiring Indonesians to lead active and healthy lives into their later years. Since launching our first walkathon in 2007, we have continued to amplify our message of osteoporosis prevention. Today, alongside 10,000 Jakartans and our strategic partners, PEROSI and the Health Ministry, we’re encouraging people to take proactive steps to maintain their bone health and stay active at every stage of life.” said Yauwanan Wigneswaran, President Director of Fonterra Brands Indonesia.

Dr. Tirza Z. Tamin, Chairman of PEROSI, highlighted the urgency of addressing osteopenia. “Osteopenia occurs when bone resorption outpaces formation, weakening the microarchitecture of bones. Factors like aging, reduced estrogen, and lack of physical activity can worsen this imbalance, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Activities like walking 10,000 steps daily are strongly recommended to help maintain bone density and reduce bone mass loss.”

Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control (P2PTM) at the Health Ministry, emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention. “Osteoporosis often goes undetected until significant damage occurs, resulting in long-term care needs and placing economic and social burdens on families. Yet, osteoporosis is preventable with a healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and routine check-ups. Together, we can ensure healthier bones for all Indonesians.”

“Today’s event also marks the start of a broader campaign to encourage Indonesians to incorporate simple, effective physical activities like walking into their daily routines. This is just the beginning. We’re bringing the ‘Jalan Kaki 10 Ribu Langkah’ movement to Surabaya later this month, on January 26. Also, osteoporosis is a silent and debilitating disease - you might not know you have it. So it's very important that you do early screening and take preventative steps early on. You can find out where the next closest free bonescanning to you is, through our social media pages such as @anlene_indonesia on Instagram or our website www.anlene.com/id.”  said Yauwanan

At Anlene™, we believe proper nutrition and an active lifestyle make good health and mobility attainable at any age, allowing everyone to live life to the fullest.
