Designed and operated by Fonterra’s farmer representative body, the Fonterra Australia Suppliers’ Council (FASC), the program provides an invaluable opportunity for young dairy farmers to come together, expand their knowledge and appreciate the many opportunities available in the industry.
2025 participant from Yannathan, Victoria, Tom Hooper, works on a Fonterra-supplying farm.
2025 Yannathan, Gippsland participant Tom Hooper said the program sharpened his focus on finances to reach his career goals.
“I applied for the program because I wanted to dive deeper into the culture of farming,” Tom said.
“I walked away with a better understanding of the basics of farm finances, which empowered me to take control of my career and fully understand the steps I need to take to start sharefarming.
Tom praised the exposure the program gave him to industry leaders.
“A highlight was getting out of my comfort zone and meeting prominent people within Australia’s dairy industry at the program’s Gala Dinner. It opens doors and reminds you that dairy is full of inspiring people, and is a great career choice,” he said.
2025 Harrisville, Queensland participant Natalija Vine said the program helped her find confidence in her career.
“I’ve started thinking more seriously about my long-term goals and how I can grow in the industry. The program gave me the push I needed.”
“I recently spent eight weeks in South Australia helping on a farm much larger than home. Without the confidence I gained throughout the program, I don’t think I would have taken on that challenge so willingly,” she said.
Run by farmers, for farmers
Southwest Victorian dairy farmer and Fonterra Australia Suppliers’ Council Executive, Brooke Theodore, has embedded herself in the program as a mentor to young farmers each year. She said the program continues to evolve to meet the needs of young workers.
2025 participant from Harrisville, QLD, Natalija Vine has recently returned from an eight-week stint on a large South Australian dairy farm.
“We’re proud to run a program that’s built by farmers, for farmers. It’s about giving young people the tools, networks and belief to take the next step in their career,” she said.
Now in its sixth year, the program has strengthened its own network and connections with representative bodies, industry groups, dairy processors and leaders in the industry.
“This unique, three-day program is not found anywhere else across the country, so to have a hand in growing it from the very beginning is something the Suppliers’ Council and Fonterra are particularly proud of.
“The goal was to become an industry program, open to all farmers in all states and territories. Fast forward six years, and we’ve done it – not for ourselves, but for the industry and all the young farmers needing a head start in their dairy careers,” Brooke said.
