Investing in local, sustainable solutions

In Sri Lanka, we're focusing on enriching livelihoods in dairying communities through sustainable long-term initiatives. This work is aligned to our purpose of creating a healthier and happier nation.

For 20 years we've been working to help uplift the local dairy industry and in 2014 launched our pioneering dairy development programme. Through this programme, we have worked towards providing sustainable solutions covering local processing and infrastructure upgrades, farmer training and development  and grass roots community initiatives.

Our efforts were nationally recognised at the Chamber of Commerce Best Corporate Citizen Awards in 2016.

Farm business management

We support Sri Lankan dairy farmers by sharing our international dairy expertise and providing them with training and education.

Our network of expert-trained Supplier Relationship Officers (SROs) are committed to working with our farmers to increase milk collection, improve milk quality and lift incomes.

Opened in February 2016, our Rs. 117 million demonstration and training farm is the first and only major private-sector funded training facility for dairy farming in Sri Lanka.

We have already trained over 6,000 farmers, university students and industry personnel. More than 500 industry leaders have visited, exchanged knowledge or attended training programmes here.

 

Milk collection and chilling

We have six milk chilling centres around Sri Lanka, where we collect more than 40,000 litres of milk each day from a network of 4,000 local farmers.

Producing the highest quality products for our consumers here in Sri Lanka and around the world is a non-negotiable.

We have invested in enhancing the quality of local milk supply by equipping milk chilling centres around the country with milk-fingerprinting, an advanced technology for analysing milk composition.

Dairy processing infrastructure

Our liquid plant is Sri Lanka's largest and most sophisticated yoghurt processing facility.

Each day it turns 40,000 litres of locally-collected milk into fresh dairy products for our Anchor and Anchor Newdale brands, including UHT milk, flavoured milk, set yoghurt, stirred yoghurt and curd.

Sustainable community initiatives

The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund was set up in 2014 to support local dairy communities through investments in water and sanitation, community infrastructure and community engagement.

This is a unique programme made sustainable by true community ownership and our partnerships.

So far through the programme we have completed over 130 initiatives that have had a long-lasting positive impact, enriching the lives of more than 65,000 children, teachers, dairy farming families and community members.

We are proud to work alongside our partners across Sri Lanka in our effort to help the local dairy industry thrive. Our partners include the National Agribusiness Development Program (NADeP), the University of Peradeniya, the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement.
