Cheer-ific! Fonterra backs young cheerleaders on their journey to the world stage

Fonterra Oceania is proud to support the Wynyard Wildcatz Gymnastics Club as they prepare to represent Tasmania on the world cheerleading stage.

The club’s cheerleading team, made up of 12 girls aged between seven and 12 years, will travel to Florida in the United States in May for an international competition, competing against some of the world’s best, after a successful fundraising effort to cover travel and competition costs.

Fonterra donated $1,000 towards the team’s dream trip, helping them near closer to their $55,000 fundraising goal.

“As part of the Wynyard community, we’re proud to support young athletes from the Wynyard Wildcatz Gymnastic Club in achieving their dreams. It’s what we call Doing Good Together,” Kevin Walsh, Fonterra Wynyard Site Manager, said.

“Sport opens doors and opportunities for young people, but often these opportunities aren’t accessible to smaller clubs and regional communities.

“We want to eliminate barriers so young athletes – no matter what sport they participate in – can seize opportunities like this. By travelling and experiencing different countries and cultures, they will gain invaluable skills to support their own development.

“Sport is a fantastic way to foster these opportunities,” Kevin said.

Over the last six months, a group of parents to the cheerleading group has raised $53,000 through a series of local fundraisers, including show bag sales, bingo nights, Taylor Swift disco parties, auctions and raffles.

“This trip to Florida will be the first time overseas for most of our young athletes, and it’s a dream come true. The generosity of businesses like Fonterra and the Wynyard community has helped make this possible,” said Megan Mcginty, parent and trip fundraising coordinator for the Wildcatz cheerleading group.

With the countdown to May 2025 and training in full swing, the team at Fonterra will be following the journey of the young Wildcatz as they flip, tumble and shake their pom-poms all the way to the Florida stage.

“The dedication and passion they’ve shown in both their training and fundraising is inspiring, and we wish them all the best as they represent our region on the world stage. We’ll be cheering loud and proud from afar,” Kevin said.

In Australia, Fonterra focusses its community support around three goals. This is where we believes we can have the greatest impact:

  • Putting quality nutrition in the hands of those who need it the most.
  • Protecting and regenerating the environment.
  • Helping to keep its rural community strong.
