Step Into Stronger Bones: 5,000 People Walk 10,000 Steps in Surabaya to Fight Osteoporosis

More than 50% of Surabaya’s population suffers from osteopenia - a condition that, if untreated, could lead to osteoporosis.[1]

Surabaya, January 26, 2025 – Building on the momentum of the Jakarta leg earlier this month, Anlene’s “10,000 Steps for Stronger Bones” campaign takes centerstage in Surabaya. With 5,000 participants expected to gather at the East Parking Lot of Plaza Surabaya, this weekend’s event aims to spark awareness around osteoporosis prevention. As a leader in bone health, Anlene is going beyond the walk by offering free bone scans across Indonesia. With a goal of conducting over 500,000 scans this year, the initiative shines a spotlight on early detection and healthy living.

Between May and December 2024, Anlene’s bone scans revealed that more than 50% of the 31,575 individuals tested in Surabaya had moderate-to-high osteoporosis risk. Even more concerning, cases of osteopenia were found in participants as young as 20 years old, proving that prevention is a must, no matter your age.

Osteoporosis is a disease that gradually develops when bone density decreases, which often leads to brittle, porous, and easily fractured bones. The causes vary and include factors such as family history, lack of physical activity, aging (particularly after 30), insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, hormonal imbalances like low estrogen levels in women and testosterone in men, and a history of fractures. With 2 in 5 Indonesians at risk of developing osteoporosis[2], there’s a growing urgency to act. However, recent scans show that only 16% of Surabaya’s residents consume high-calcium milk, while half admit to a lack of physical activity.

“Osteoporosis is often called the ‘silent disease’ because it develops unnoticed until the damage is done. But simple habits, like walking 10,000 steps daily, can help maintain bone density and keep osteoporosis at bay. With 2 out of 5 Indonesians at risk of developing osteoporosis[2], this condition impacts not only physical health but also the overall quality of life. Prioritizing bone health from a young age is essential so people can stay active and enjoy life to the fullest,” said Dr. Jongky Hendro Prajitno, Chairperson of the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI) Surabaya Branch.

Nanik Sukristina, Surabaya Health Office, represented by Mohammad Yanuar Afandi, the representative from Subcoordinator for Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, Surabaya City Health Office expressed her full support for the program and said, “Surabaya’s elderly population is growing, with 351,957 seniors recorded last year[3]. However, 63% of the elderly are at risk of reduced mobility due to osteoporosis[4]. Prevention through education, nutrition, and regular check-ups is essential to ensuring a healthier, more active old age”

Yauwanan Wigneswaran, President Director of Fonterra Brands Indonesia, talked about Anlene’s long-standing commitment to bone health and said, “For decades, Anlene has been at the forefront of bone health, inspiring Indonesians to stay active and enjoy life to the fullest. By empowering people to take action early, we’re creating a future where everyone can move freely at every stage of life.”

Adhy Karyono, Acting Governor of East Java, also commends Anlene for its positive efforts and says, “This initiative is a fantastic example of teamwork. I hope it inspires the people of Surabaya to embrace an active and healthier lifestyle, reducing osteoporosis risks across the region” he remarked.

Anlene believes that with the right nutrition and an active lifestyle, everyone can live life to the fullest at every age. Join the movement toward healthier bones. Find your nearest free bone scan location by visiting Anlene’s Instagram (@anlene_indonesia) or website (www.anlene.com/id).
