Helping Foodbank source 82 million meals for Australians in need

During a challenging year, Fonterra worked closely with Foodbank to help put quality nutrition in the hands of those who need it.

Last year, through our ongoing partnership with Foodbank, we donated 430,000 meals to people in need, 150,000 litres of milk for its National Milk Program and more than $20,000 towards essential food and grocery relief.

This comes at a critical time, as now more than ever people are struggling to put food on the table.

Foodbank has seen a significant increase in demand for food assistance and this donation, along with those from other partners, helps ensure that families in need have access to nutritious meals.

Foodbank Australia CEO, Brianna Casey, said last year Foodbank sourced 82 million meals with the support of its partners.

“The cost-of-living crisis and ongoing natural disasters made 2022 another extremely challenging year. But, thanks to the generosity and kindness of our partners, those doing it tough have one less thing to worry about,” Brianna said.

Foodbank works with 2,950 frontline charities and 2,890 school breakfast programs throughout Australia, providing access to good quality food, no matter an individual’s situation.

Last year, Fonterra formed a committee of people called our Foodbank Ambassadors – they’re dedicated to taking our collaborative efforts with Foodbank to new heights and making an even greater impact in the fight against food insecurity.

Not only do the Foodbank Ambassadors help raise awareness within our business of the great work that Foodbank does, they also lead our internal initiatives like the Foodbank Christmas Walk and our Double the Milk to Foodbank Program. Both initiatives aim to raise extra funds for Foodbank on top of the donations that we already provide.

Fonterra’s Development Technologist, Liz Newnam, was one of the first people to put her hand up to be a Foodbank Ambassador. Liz said that it’s great to see how our donations last year made a difference to those doing it tough.

“Everyone at Fonterra is incredibly proud of our partnership with Foodbank – we can see the difference that it makes, and it gives us a sense of pride.

"For those facing food insecurity, even securing a basic staple like milk can be a challenge. That's why it's wonderful to have the opportunity to share our dairy foods to those in need and help alleviate their struggle," Liz said.
