Traditional breakfast fuelling our kids with Weet-bix and milk has long been regarded as a strong start to a kiwi kid’s day. And it’s this traditional breakfast that has breakfast clubs around the country competing for the KickStart Breakfast Awards. 

Awards were up for grabs this year for three deserving winners, with Manurewa Intermediate taking out the Breakfast Club of the Year category. 

Principal Iain Taylor said the school joined the programme in 2010 and since then, academic progress has skyrocketed.

“I put the improvement down to the kids being well fed, which in turn has helped with their concentration during learning times,” said Iain.  

“Milk and Weet-bix are providing the kids with a great start to the day, so we thank Fonterra and their farmers for their continuous support of the programme.”

The other two awards were the Student Champion award, won by Reporoa College’s Jasmaine Worthington, and Kaikohe East School volunteers Lois Maunell and Ani Milner were awarded the Unsung Hero award for giving up their time to volunteer at a breakfast club. 

Fonterra In-School Programmes Manager Katalin Csengo said the programme wouldn’t exist without the Anchor milk provided by our farmers.  

“Our farmers’ milk is the backbone of this programme and without it, we wouldn’t be able to provide breakfast to more than 900 schools throughout New Zealand,” said Katalin. 

Through our partnership with Sanitarium and the Ministry of Social Development, the Kickstart Breakfast Awards recognise those who give up their time to help give kiwi kids a great start to their day. 

KickStart Breakfast has also been selected as a finalist in the ‘Partnering for Good’ category for the 2017 NZI Sustainable Network Awards. The winner will be announced on 30th November.
