From the farmers
Hi, we are James and Jacquie, dairy farmers near Mayfield in the Ashburton District. Jacquie is from Christchurch and James grew up on this family farm.
Having experienced the ups and downs of dry stock farming, we decided in 2010 to convert to dairy for spring 2011. We have three children, one who has finished university, one about to start university and our youngest is in her last year at school.
We are both involved in and support the local community when we can. Jacquie has an interest in local tourism and we host farm tours. We are delighted to show case what we are about and tell the NZ story of farming.
Our Farm and Environmental Story
When we were doing the conversion we were aware of the need to adopt modern technology to future proof the environmental part of dairying in Canterbury.
We built an irrigation pond to enhance irrigation reliability and this is also a haven for ducks and black swans.
All our waterways are fenced off and we lined the effluent pond and put in a pump so the filtered effluent water can be applied along with the irrigation water. The irrigation company we get our water from requires us to do farm environmental plans and these are done to a high standard to meet the requirements of the local regional Council (ECan).We also have moisture sensors which allow us to monitor water requirements. We continue to enhance the property with tree planting and plan to do more.
