Otago Regional Council set water quality limits in late 2016 through their ‘Water for Otago’ regional plan to ensure effluent, sediment and other contaminants are managed appropriately.
Farmers face particular challenges due to frequent flooding conditions including large floods in the winter of 2017.
There are currently over ten community-led catchment groups, many of which Fonterra and our farmers are involved in, working to improve water quality across the region.

Landowners, residents, NZ Landcare Trust and Fonterra have worked together to deliver the Kakanui Catchment Project. It will increase knowledge and awareness to improve water quality, reduce soil erosion and increase biodiversity within the catchment.

Fonterra is working with NZ Landcare Trust, Pomahaka Farmers Water Care Group and Pomahaka Stakeholders Group to improve farm practices and infrastructure, reduce nutrient loss and improve water quality in the Pomahaka Catchment.
