There's an important conversation happening about the health of New Zealand's waterways. We care about the problem and want to share what we're doing to help fix it. We thought the easiest way to show everyone what we've been doing would be to invite them to come and see it for themselves. It's also a great opportunity to have a fun day on the farm and see where your milk comes from.
Sunday November 11 from 11am - 3pm. You're welcome to come any time during this period, but please note last entry will be at 2.15pm.
You can choose whether you want to walk around the farm by yourself or join one of the regular farmer-led tours. This is a great opportunity to find out what really happens on farm and to have a chat to our farmers. We have some fun activities for the kids as well – from discovering where milk really comes from, to seeing the technology inside one of our milk tankers, plus games and gumboot throwing. At the end of the tour there will be free Fonterra product for people to enjoy, including a special ice cream flavour created just for Open Gates, as well as Mainland cheese and Anchor Uno yoghurts.
In order to protect our farms and the animals on them, please don’t come to Open Gates if you’ve been on an overseas farm or been in close contact with a sick animal during the period from November 1 – November 11. This is to prevent the spread of disease.
Most farms are holding a milking demonstration on the day. The timing of this will vary by farm, but in most cases it will be later in the open day (probably after 2pm). You can check what time milking will be at the farm you're visiting on arrival.
You must wear closed toe shoes in order to enter the farm. Sorry, no jandals or sandals are to be worn. Gumboots are ideal, but not necessary. Also make sure you've got sunblock or a rain coat, depending on the weather.
If you do want to have lunch at the farm we suggest you bring a picnic. All farms will have free samples of Fonterra products for you to try. Some farms are also having sausage sizzles and coffee carts, so do bring some cash in case you want to buy something.
You're welcome to bring a picnic to Open Gates.
Open Gates is a free event. All farms will have free product tastings and some farms may also have coffee carts and sausage sizzles to fundraise for local community projects, so bring a few coins for them.

Unfortunately we can't accomodate school groups. Please also note that one adult is required for every three children for supervision purposes.
The main risk of spreading Mycoplasma bovis is through animal to animal contact. To minimise any risk of the disease being spread during Open Gates we're making sure people don't touch any cows or calves. All visitors will also need to walk through a disinfectant footbath on entry and exit from the farm. Read more on Mycoplasma bovis here
There will be plenty of parking available at the farm on the day.
Sorry, no dogs or other animals are allowed onto the farm. This includes dogs staying in cars.
As this is a working farm there will be no pram access on the day.
As this is a working farm there will be no specific wheel chair access. However we'll do everything we can to accomodate you. If you have special needs and are considering booking, drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll be able to talk you through access to that farm.
