Fighting Fires just got easier thanks to Fonterra Grass Roots Fund

Kamo Volunteer Fire Brigade say they can now cut through to the scene of a fire faster thanks to a grant from the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund.

The brigade used the grant money to purchase new and more powerful saws to be carried on their trucks and appliances.

Chief Fire Officer Colin Thomson says their old equipment was ready for an upgrade.

"Our previous saws were at least 15 years old, the money helped up purchase two new power saws which are better designed and are going to make our jobs a lot faster and easier."

The saws are used to cut through material such as weatherboard or decking to help firefighters get to the scene of a fire quicker. The newly purchased sabre saw can also cut through metal.

The brigade is yet to receive their new tools, which had to be ordered from America. But once they arrive Colin says it’s not just Kamo residents who will benefit.

As well as our own area we also provide call out support to fire brigades in three surrounding areas so a lot of people are going to benefit from this new equipment.

Fonterra’s Global Sponsorship Manager Kane Silcock says the Grass Roots Fund supports initiatives like the Kamo Fire Brigade which enrich people’s lives and benefit their community.

It’s our way of supporting projects and ideas that bring our communities together and make them better, safer and more vibrant places to be. It’s a way to say thanks to the people of New Zealand.
