Meet Anita Scott-Dekker from our Kapuni Site

The site manager for Kapuni is Anita Scott-Dekker.

Anita manages the inhalation-grade part of the facility, managing the whole operation from production scheduling, ensuring the right materials and resource are available, ensuring the site maintenance is up to export compliance, and customer relationship management. We caught up with Anita to talk about her life and career.

How did you come to be in the role you have today?

I started my career at Royal Friesland Campina in the Netherlands, I had a technical role and watched my colleagues build an inhalation lactose plant in Veghel, the Netherlands, and start to develop the pharmaceutical lactose business.
In 2006, when the joint venture was formed with Fonterra, I contacted the then CEO of DFE Pharma who was an old colleague of mine and told him I wanted to join them and be involved. Two years later, the role for the site manager for Kapuni came up so I jumped on the opportunity and moved to the other side of the world to look after the business in New Zealand.

What is it like working on a product like inhalable lactose?

It is a privilege to work in this state of the art production facility. Everything is nicely laid out, labelled and extremely clean. The product we make is made to the highest quality standards with very tight specifications. We have a small team and all of us understand who our end users are, and therefore understand the importance of providing high quality product. There is a lot of pride and ownership within the team!

What are you most proud of about your time at Fonterra?

When I arrived, we had only just started making commercial batches at the Kapuni plant. In the nine years I have been here, we have developed a deep understanding of the capabilities of the plant and are now able to produce and control the product within a very tight range. I am also very proud of our safety record -- not a single injury, big or small, for well over seven years. I believe that the focus on quality and following procedures have had a big impact on that as it all comes down to positive behaviour and consideration of downstream effects before actions are taken. The whole team live and breathe this.
