William Grayling

Fonterra Alumni 2018 - 2019

Originally from a dairy farming background in the Waikato I spent a year as a farm consultant in Southland following my four year degree (M.Appl.Sc Farm Management Consultancy) at Lincoln University before taking up a Farm Managers position for Spectrum Group at Chertsey Dairies  (800 cows) in 2009.

After two years, my wife Kim (who works as an HR Advisor at the Ashburton District Council) and I shifted to Spectrum’s Singletree farm (1600 cows) next door and in 2013 we entered an equity sharemilking partnership with Jim van der Poel as 1800 cows.

We have since increased the scale of our sharemilking business to encompass 3300 cows across two farms and the sharemilking business owns a share in the 800ha these cows are milked on.

I enjoy the challenges farming offers and in particular the challenge of farming on a large scale and the people that this involves. I consider myself to be a hands on practical farmer but really thrive of the business behind this as well and the challenge of growing an equity base for my wife and I.

I am currently involved in Federated Farmers as the Chair of the Mid-Canterbury Sharemilking section and have previously been involved in local Young Farmers clubs and districts and in 2011 I won the New Zealand Young Farmer of the year. I have recently started a role as director in our irrigation co-operative Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Ltd and am looking to further develop my skills to contribute further in this role.

Kimberley and I have a young daughter Lucy who is 9 months old.
