Claire Nicholson 

Fonterra Alumni 2018 - 2019

Claire Nicholson graduated from Massey University in 1991 with a bachelor of Veterinary Science. Prior to that Claire studied, also at Massey, Business Studies, majoring in Agricultural Business and Marketing.

Claire completed 12 years in veterinary clinical practice ranging from Dairy practice in the Waikato and north Wales, to managing a very successful small animal practice in London.

Claire then entered the animal health industry working initially as the dairy product manager, then as the general manager for Intervet New Zealand. Claire was also a member of the executive committee of Dairy Cattle Veterinarians.

From Intervet Claire joined Agrifeeds a ruminant nutrition company as the business development, marketing and veterinary technical manager.

Three years ago Claire established Sirona Animal Health, the purpose of which was to develop and market unique products for the animal heath market. After three years of work Sirona has recently launched the first product – Alpheus- a controlled release capsule for the prevention of parasites in cattle.  Several new products are currently in the development pipeline.

Claire was awarded a scholarship to attend the Hilary Leadership programme from which she graduated  in May 2011. This programme, for high performing senior executives is run by Auckland University Institute of Leadership. Claire is also a graduate of  the AWDT Escalator governance training program.

Claire is currently a director of the Paraninihi Ki Waitotara Incorporation, a Taranaki Maori incorporation. As a member of the Ngati ruanui iwi it is important to her to ensure that the incorporation’s assets are grown and protected for future generations. Claire also has had a privileged position as a board observer for Agresearch.

Married to Michael in 1990 they have two boys – Joshua 21 and Matt 19 – both studying at Otago University. In between business commitments Claire and Mike love to travel, enjoy regular exercise, collect art and wine, ski and enjoy spending time in and on the water.
