Quake Hit Kaikoura School Kids Get Surprise Gift From Our Family To Theirs
30 May 2017
Every school child in in Kaikoura recently went home with a gift of Fonterra product from our family to theirs.
It all came about when NZ based Fonterra Brands staff asked for the allocation of product they usually take home to their families at Christmas time to instead be shared with families in Kaikoura, a community in New Zealand’s South Island hit by an earthquake in November 2016.
After Christmas the FBNZ team set about looking for ideas of how to best share their gift with Kaikoura families. Kaikoura Primary School Principal, Nigel Easson, suggested the idea of sending every school child in Kaikoura home with a surprise cooler bag of Fonterra Brands goodies to share with their families on one special day. The team thought this was a great suggestion and set about making it happen.
A small project team was set up and many of the team pitched in with choosing and shipping the goodies to NZ’s South Island, where the team at the Christchurch DC packed 600 cooler bags with yoghurt, cheese, spread and milk. Local Anchor franchisees, Wayne and Diane King, generously put on a special round to pick up the goods from Christchurch and deliver the gifts to all five schools in Kaikoura, a four hour drive away. A small team of FBNZ staff from manufacturing and office sites also travelled to Kaikoura to help hand out the cooler bags at the schools.
Mary Grey, Principal of St Josephs School in Kaikoura said; “getting these bags with these goodies is just so timely, the children have survived the first term, but now the winter’s setting in we can feel a wee bit of stress and strain there and this is a lovely top up with a really practical gift,” she said. “You’re supporting the children, but you’re also supporting the families and I don’t think there could have been a better time really, it’s just lovely thank you.” she added.
