Our governance development programme

The Governance Development Programme was established by the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council and Board of Directors in 2006 to help address dairy industry and rural sector succession needs.

The primary objective of the Programme is to create a pool of future farmer leaders by equipping participants with the skills and capabilities required to govern rural organisations and potentially Fonterra.

The scope of the Programme has been expanded to develop leaders across New Zealand’s rural sector as well as Fonterra, which has opened the door for more farmers to take part. The content has also been streamlined and the Programme reduced from 18 months to one year.

Content is provided by Fonterra and Massey University’s College of Business.

Fonterra also supports their graduating alumni through annual programmes designed to foster a strong governance network, maintain governance capability and motivation, extend knowledge in governance areas and support a culture of continuing professional development.

Programme Overview

There are two stages to the Governance Development Programme. Participants attending Workshop One who wish to continue and complete the full Governance Development Programme will be asked to submit an Expression of Interest for the next stage of the programme.

This, along with other criteria and input will be used as part of the assessment process considered by the Governance Development Committee when selecting participants for Stage Two.
