About the Culinary Olympics

Founded in Germany, the Culinary Olympics is the world’s oldest and most prestigious culinary competition.  The idea was born in 1886, when a group of German chefs envisioned an event that would communicate international trends in cuisine, while promoting culinary education and tourism.

The first Culinary Olympics was held in 1900, when four nations took part in a cooking contest at the Frankfurt Fairground.  Since the inaugural Culinary Olympics, the event has grown exponentially, with 2,000 chefs from 40 nations scheduled to compete in 2016.

New Zealand has not fielded a team to Germany since 1988.
