Fonterra’s Organic Certification

Fonterra recognises the importance of organics in the consumer market. Since its entry into the organic market, Fonterra has ensured an internationally accepted standard for its products.

Fonterra’s organic dairy products meet or exceed all 48 countries regulating organics including the EU and US.

Certification is by the New Zealand Governments auditing agency, AsureQuality, an accredited IFOAM member holding ISO 065 and ISO 17020. New Zealand has intergovernmental agreements which are administered by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA). The New Zealand Official Assurance Program (OOAP) currently includes the following markets:

  • EU
  • Japan
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • United States of America

Fonterra also links in with other New Zealand and international organisations to promote organics. Organics Aotearoa New Zealand is the organic peak body in New Zealand dedicated to developing and promoting organics within New Zealand.

For the USA, Fonterra participates in a New Zealand - USDA recognition programme, one of only six other countries in the world with this arrangement. The USDA certifies a total of 45 foreign countries.

For the EU, Fonterra participates in a New Zealand equivalency programme, one of only six other countries in the world with this arrangement. Organic food is imported into the EU by 97 countries.

Fonterra Organics also meets or exceeds the private standards of the Soil Association and the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM).
